Emporia resolves issue with Smart Plugs that spurred recall

Update (November 7, 2023): Emporia has fixed the issue with its Emporia Smart Plugs and they are once again available for sale. Keep in mind that the previous recall still applies, and if you purchased products between the dates listed below, you should consider returning your smart plugs.

Original story: If you purchased an Emporia Smart Plug between July 1, 2022 and August 1, 2023, there is a good chance that your product is defective. The company has issued a voluntary recall of smart plugs purchased from Amazon and the Emporia website during that period, because they may have a mechanical problem that could make them “potentially unsafe.”

The voluntary recall message sent by Emporia states that affected customers are eligible for either a full refund or a free replacement of their smart plugs. If your plugs are connected to the Emporia app, you will get a notification if you are using a faulty smart product.

A notification email from Emporia reads, “In cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Emporia is voluntarily recalling its North American smart plugs because they are not adequately grounded and could cause electrical shock to the user. ” “This recall only affects 120V North American smart plugs purchased between July 1, 2022 and August 1, 2023; North American smart plugs purchased outside of these dates, as well as 240V EU and UK smart plugs, will not be affected.

To learn more about the recall, you can contact the toll-free Emporia support line at 844-367-6742. You can also visit emporiaenergy.com/recall. Emporia says that, to its knowledge, there have been “zero incidents” of injury or damage caused by faulty smart plugs.

Our Emporia Smart Plug review found it to be an affordable product packed with useful energy-tracking features. If your plug is not affected by this voluntary recall, you should continue to use it normally. But if your smart plug is an affected model, be sure to stop using it and contact Emporia for a new one (or a refund).
