Where to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas (all versions)

“You are a very mean person, Mr. Grinch. You are a real heel. You’re cute as a cactus, you’re cute as a fish, Mister Grinch.”

For Dr. Seuss fans of all ages, Albert Hague’s incredibly catchy song from the original TV special, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (as performed by Thurl Ravenscroft) perfectly summed up the despicable malcontent who was so frustrated with the Christmas fun that he decided to make everyone else as miserable as himself by taking away their gifts and pageantry.

However, the Grinch’s enduring popularity isn’t just because he was such an effective villain. This is because the Grinch has knowledge of the true meaning of Christmas and has a redemptive turn as he realizes how wrong he was to rob Whoville. And the Grinch went to great lengths to set things right before embracing change within himself. As the story goes, his heart grew three sizes that day, and he did not die of a sudden coronary episode.

Some Grinch-like Hollywood executive has made sure no one can stream live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas Without paying extra this holiday season. Looks like someone deserves coal in their stockings for this.

Director Ron Howard and screenwriters Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman took some extreme liberties in this, reinterpreting the Grinch’s backstory with his alienation from Whoville. For example, the Grinch once loved Martha May Whovier (Christine Baranski) and shares a mutual animosity with his childhood bully, Mayor Augustus May Whovier (Jeffrey Tambor).

Additionally, the film establishes the Grinch’s reluctant bond with young Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) when he saves her life, and she tries to include him in the town’s Christmas celebrations. The ending of this movie is essentially the same as the TV special, it just takes longer to get there.

Is any version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas worth watching?

Yes, especially the original animated version. Despite being old, it still provides an entertaining, albeit brief, twist on a classic Dr. Seuss story. Young children will be especially entertained by its simplistic story and clear narrative of good versus evil.

The Jim Carrey version has both fans and critics. The live-action interpretation directed by Ron Howard loses some of its magic in its big-budget translation, and Dr. Seuss can get a little annoying at 105 minutes. Still, Carrey is in his peak comedic form here, and the makeup and production design are truly captivating.

For modern fans, Grinch Probably the best chance to catch it. It features flashy modern animation and a more contemplative story than the live-action film. Carrey himself may be a live-action cartoon, but the Grinch’s unique physicality will always work better in animation.
