It looks like Nvidia’s RTX 40-series refresh is just around the corner, and the rumor mill is hot on the heels of what we can expect from the new update. Today, we heard more about what could happen to some of Nvidia’s current best graphics cards when their new counterparts are released. It seems like Nvidia is sticking to one GPU that’s actually a good value and replacing the two that aren’t.
According to Board Channels, a website that frequently posts leaks about upcoming PC hardware releases, Nvidia has big plans for all three Super cards. The RTX 4080 Super and RTX 4070 Ti Super are rumored to replace the existing RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti. However, the RTX 4070 is said to be sticking around, and will be joined by the RTX 4070 Super as an alternative rather than a replacement.
Current reports state that Nvidia will soon begin shipping the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti, gradually phasing them out in favor of their Super versions. If the rumors about these cards prove to be true, it would make a lot of sense. With the RTX 4080 Super and RTX 4070 Ti Super offering minimal upgrades in terms of CUDA core count, they won’t make any significant difference in performance. Nvidia will end up with two nearly identical GPUs on the market in both cases, and pricing will decide which one will actually be sold.

However, the RTX 4070 Super is likely to be in another league compared to the RTX 4070. VideoCardz estimates that the new GPU will increase CUDA cores by 22%, with the Super version offering 7,168 cores while the base 4070 comes with 5,888. The difference in cores between the 4070 Ti and 4070 Ti Super is comparatively minimal, rumored to be 8,448 vs 7,680. However, the RTX 4070 Ti Super can offer 16GB of VRAM on a 256-bit memory bus, which is a much-needed update.
If these reports hold up, we’ll start to see the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti slowly disappear from the market rather than seeing any major price adjustments on these cards. This makes me worried that eventually the new Super Edition won’t launch with a lower price. It’s quite possible that we’ll pay the same prices as the non-Super versions, but in return, we’ll get slightly better performance.
The RTX 4070, if it sticks, could see a price adjustment – it’s likely to drop to $500. In terms of price, the RTX 4070 Super could replace the existing RTX 4070 Ti and probably be slightly cheaper. In order for the RTX 4080 Super to not be as terrible a price as the current 4080, it would still need to be discounted – but will it be? only time will tell.
