When checking out Black Friday deals, you may be looking for the very latest technology but this is not always the best value way of doing things. For example, right now, you can pick up the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones for just $250 at Best Buy, down from $350. The main thing that makes the $100 savings even more attractive is that the new WH-1000XM5 are only enjoying a $70 price cut, meaning they’re down to $330. In fact, there isn’t $80 worth of improvement between the two. Sure, pay extra if you want the latest technology, but in my experience, the Sony WH-1000XM4 are quite good and one of the best Black Friday headphone deals worth noting. Let’s see how good they are.

Why should you buy Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones?

If you take a look at our best headphones, you’ll see the Sony WH-1000XM5 at the top. They’re great cans but before them, the Sony WH-1000XM4 dominated. Strangely, while you might think the WH-1000XM5 are better in every way, they actually miss out on some important features like they only fold flat instead of up which is awkward to travel with them.

Also, the Sony WH-1000XM5 does not provide the same amount of clamping force as the Sony WH-1000XM4 which is a particular issue for small heads like me. Ultimately though, there is surprisingly little difference between the two and some people actually believe that the Sony WH-1000XM4 is the more impressive aural sounder. I am also included in that. As a fan of bass-heavy headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM4 sound more powerful. Importantly, that power comes at a lower price than the latest models, so it’s a bargain. With great audio quality with DSEE Extreme technology and Edge AI support, the Sony WH-1000XM4 is great for escaping the world. The ANC is almost peerless and I found it worked brilliantly, even when I was walking near a busy road or dealing with my neighbours’ never-ending construction work.

Don’t miss:

Whenever I want to interact with the world again, I can use Speech-to-Chat, which automatically stops the music when I say hello to someone entering the room or walking by. I start talking to anyone. Similarly, the wear detection is perfect as it works really well and means I don’t have to worry about digging out my phone to manually turn things off.

Amidst all these great features, the Sony Headphones app is also a delight. It is smart enough to provide you with adaptive sound controls which is a fancy thing to adapt as per your regular excursions. It knows whether you are walking or traveling and adapts accordingly. It’s these simple little things that make the Sony WH-1000XM4 a joy to use, and these are the kind of headphones I rarely talk about (because, of course, they’re also extremely comfortable).

It’s tempting to buy the latest Sony WH-1000XM5 but you don’t really need to while the Sony WH-1000XM4 is still around. Marked down from $350 to $250 at Best Buy, you save $100 off the normal price and get them for a significantly lower price than any other headphones that could possibly rival them. I use them every day, especially while relaxing at home. They’re just that good.
